A violent assault disrupted what should have been a peaceful snorkeling excursion off the Hawaiian coast on Thursday afternoon, leaving a 62-year-old boat captain hospitalized with multiple stab wounds.
The incident occurred aboard a fishing vessel conducting a three-hour snorkeling tour near Kailua-Kona, a town located on the west coast of Hawaii’s southernmost island. According to the Hawaii Police Department, 21-year-old Avery Nissen allegedly attacked the vessel’s captain with a fillet knife while the boat was at sea.
Nissen, who hails from eastern Kansas, was reportedly among several passengers aboard the vessel when the assault took place. The unprovoked attack left the captain with a stab wound to his lower abdomen and multiple knife cuts to his head and hands. Other passengers on the boat intervened to restrain the suspect until the vessel could return to shore.
Patrol officers were dispatched to Honokōhau Harbor at approximately 3:21 p.m. after receiving reports that a fishing vessel was returning from sea with both the victim and suspect of a stabbing incident still aboard. Upon the boat’s arrival at the harbor, law enforcement immediately took Nissen into custody.
The injured captain was transported to a local hospital where medical staff have reported his condition as stable. Despite the severity of his injuries, including the abdominal wound and numerous defensive cuts to his hands and head, the victim is expected to recover.
Nissen now faces serious criminal charges including second-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault, and second-degree assault. The court has set his bail at $1,570,000, reflecting the gravity of the alleged offense. He is scheduled to make his initial appearance before Kona District Court on Monday.
The Hawaii Police Department has indicated that the motive behind the attack remains unclear. Investigators have not released any information suggesting prior contact between Nissen and the victim, nor have they identified any apparent trigger for the violent outburst during what was intended to be a recreational ocean tour.
The incident has raised concerns about safety protocols on tourist vessels, particularly regarding the accessibility of potentially dangerous implements such as fillet knives during passenger excursions. While such tools are commonly found on fishing boats for practical purposes, this case highlights the potential risks they can pose in the wrong hands.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack and have requested that anyone with additional information about the incident contact the Hawaii Police Department. They are particularly interested in speaking with other passengers who witnessed the assault or events leading up to it.
The case serves as a stark reminder of how quickly a routine tourist activity can turn dangerous, and the importance of having safety measures and trained personnel ready to respond to unexpected emergencies at sea.
