A 34-year-old Florida woman remains in custody without bond after authorities say she opened fire on three women outside a Homestead restaurant, injuring two of them in an unprovoked confrontation.
Samantha Morales was arrested on April 17 following the shooting incident outside Dr. Limon restaurant in Homestead, Florida. According to police reports, the confrontation began when Morales approached three women who were saying goodbye to each other after spending an evening together.
The incident unfolded when Morales, driving a black Tesla, pulled up to the group of women who were standing outside the restaurant. None of the victims knew Morales prior to the encounter. According to witness statements provided to investigators, Morales initiated contact by asking the women if they were “all good.”
When one of the women responded affirmatively and returned the question, Morales allegedly escalated the situation with hostile language, suggesting the women had a problem. Police reports indicate that Morales then exited her vehicle and challenged the group, asking what they intended to do about it.
Witnesses at the scene observed Morales was armed with a firearm and attempted to warn the three women to move away from the confrontation. Despite these warnings, the situation rapidly deteriorated. According to the arrest report, Morales discharged her weapon twice, striking two of the three women.
Following the gunshots, a physical altercation occurred when one of the victims attempted to disarm Morales by lunging at her to knock the weapon away. The confrontation continued until law enforcement officers arrived at the scene and separated the involved parties.
When questioned by police after being read her Miranda rights, Morales claimed she could not recall the specific details of the incident. She told officers she believed she was fighting for her life during the encounter. Morales also admitted to consuming three alcoholic beverages prior to the shooting.
During a bond hearing on Monday, a judge ordered Morales to remain in custody at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center without bond. The court determined that the severity of the charges and circumstances of the case warranted continued detention.
Morales faces substantial legal consequences for the incident. Prosecutors have charged her with two counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and three counts of aggravated assault with a firearm. She also faces one count of using a firearm during the commission of a crime and two misdemeanor charges.
The two women who sustained gunshot wounds were transported to a medical facility where they were reported to be in stable condition. The extent of their injuries has not been publicly disclosed.
Morales is scheduled to make another court appearance on Wednesday, with her formal arraignment set for May 18. The case has drawn attention to issues of random violence and the dangers of confrontations involving firearms.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to gather evidence and interview witnesses who were present during the incident. Law enforcement officials have not released information about a potential motive for the shooting, and it remains unclear what prompted Morales to approach and confront the group of women who were strangers to her.
