Florida Woman Charged with Killing Two Ex-Husbands on Same Day Could Face Death Penalty

A 51-year-old Florida woman charged with fatally shooting both of her ex-husbands on the same day could face the death penalty, prosecutors announced Tuesday. Susan Avalon has pleaded not guilty to murder charges in two separate counties following the December 17, 2025 deaths of Timothy Flecher, 55, and David Scott, 54.

The Hillsborough County State’s Attorney’s Office confirmed they will pursue capital punishment in connection with Flecher’s death. The Tampa resident was discovered with a fatal gunshot wound at his home after an unusual 911 call raised concerns.

According to court documents, someone placed an emergency call using Flecher’s phone but remained silent. Dispatchers reported hearing sounds consistent with gunfire before the line disconnected. When officials called back, a woman answered, claiming she was exercising and had accidentally activated the call before ending the conversation.

Neighbors reported seeing a woman in gray clothing leaving Flecher’s residence in a silver Honda Odyssey shortly after the incident. Avalon’s current boyfriend later identified the voice from the 911 recording as belonging to her.

The second shooting occurred in Bradenton, where Scott was found with a chest wound at his residence. The couple’s teenage daughter placed the emergency call, and Scott survived long enough to tell responding deputies that his ex-wife might have been responsible for the attack.

Investigators discovered a spilled container of soup from Panera Bread near Scott’s body. Security footage from a nearby Panera location allegedly showed a woman matching Avalon’s description taking a bag of food designated for delivery drivers without payment. Manatee County Sheriff Rick Wells stated the woman appeared to use this method to gain entry to the victim’s home.

When Manatee County deputies arrived at Avalon’s residence to question her about Scott’s death, they observed her exiting with cleaning supplies and bleach. She then entered a silver Honda Odyssey in her driveway and began wiping down the vehicle’s interior.

In a notable exchange, when detectives informed Avalon they needed to discuss her ex-husband, she reportedly asked, “Which one?” Authorities said she initially believed the officers were from Hillsborough County regarding Flecher’s death, rather than Manatee County investigating Scott’s shooting.

Surveillance evidence appears to link the incidents. The woman captured on camera at Panera Bread wore identical clothing to the person neighbors saw leaving Flecher’s home and the individual spotted departing Scott’s residence after the shooting.

Avalon faces first-degree murder charges in Hillsborough County for Flecher’s death and second-degree murder charges in Manatee County for Scott’s killing. She remains in custody at the Hillsborough County jail without bond.

The case has drawn significant attention due to the unusual circumstances of both victims being former spouses killed on the same day. Legal proceedings are scheduled to continue with a July 9 court appearance in Hillsborough County and a July 30 hearing in Manatee County.

If convicted and sentenced to death, Avalon would join a small number of women on Florida’s death row. The state has executed three women since reinstating capital punishment in 1976.
