In May 2026, a developing case in Washington drew significant attention after Dr. Michael R. Wilmington, a 61-year-old pediatrician, was found dead while under investigation for alleged crimes involving children.
Authorities reported that Wilmington, who practiced in the Portland-Vancouver area and lived in La Center, died by suicide shortly after a felony warrant had been issued against him.
The investigation began in February when the Vancouver Police Department received a cyber tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. The tip identified explicit material linked to an IP address in Vancouver.
Detectives traced the information to Chad Hartley, a 36-year-old physician’s assistant working at PeaceHealth’s Fisher’s Landing clinic. Hartley was arrested on April 29 and booked on multiple charges involving crimes against children.
Further investigation connected Hartley to Dr. Wilmington. On April 30, authorities executed a search warrant at Wilmington’s residence, where they collected evidence.
That same day, Wilmington’s employer, Kaiser Permanente, terminated his employment and revoked his access to all facilities after learning of the investigation.
On May 1, police secured a felony warrant charging Wilmington with first-degree crimes involving children. Allegations included claims of inappropriate conduct involving minors at his home.
On May 2, authorities confirmed that Wilmington had been found dead.
Following his death, multiple individuals have come forward with allegations connected to the case. Law enforcement officials have stated that the investigation remains active.
The case continues to raise serious concerns as authorities work to gather further evidence and determine the full scope of the situation.
