Houston Family Tragedy: River Oaks Case Leaves Community in Shock

A tragic incident in Houston, Texas, has left a family of four dead and a community searching for answers.

Authorities say 39-year-old Thy Mitchell, her husband Matthew Mitchell, 52, and their two children, 8-year-old Maya and 4-year-old Max, were found inside their River Oaks home after a welfare check was requested by a babysitter and a family member.

Officers arrived at the residence around 5:30 p.m. on Monday after concerns were raised when the family had not been heard from since the previous evening.

According to investigators, evidence at the scene indicated that Matthew Mitchell was responsible for the deaths of the three other family members before taking his own life. Officials have not released a motive, and the case remains under investigation.

Thy Mitchell was widely known in Houston’s restaurant community as the co-owner of Traveler’s Table and Traveler’s Cart, businesses inspired by global cuisine and travel experiences. She was raised in Houston and had a background rooted in her family’s restaurant business, later earning degrees from the University of Houston and Penn State.

Matthew Mitchell had previously worked in journalism and the pharmaceutical industry before transitioning into the restaurant field.

The couple’s work gained national attention when they appeared on a 2021 episode of Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives. Thy also launched a fashion brand focused on travel-friendly clothing.

The news has deeply impacted the local community. Colleagues and supporters have expressed shock and grief, with the restaurant issuing a statement asking for privacy during this difficult time.

The tragedy is made even more poignant by a social media post shared just one day earlier, showing Thy and her daughter preparing for a family wedding.
