A case in Texas has drawn significant attention after the deaths of two young children led to criminal charges months after the incident.
Laura Nicholson, 23, of Katy, is facing two counts of injury to a child following an investigation by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office. Charges were filed on May 8, 2026, after toxicology results and evidence were reviewed over several months.
The incident occurred on February 11, 2026, at the family home. Around 11 a.m., the children’s grandmother returned from errands and noticed the back door partially open. She discovered 3-year-old Kinsley Kite and 2-year-old Kelsey Kite unresponsive in the backyard pool.
At the time, Nicholson and the children’s grandfather were inside the home. The children were pulled from the water before emergency responders arrived approximately 30 minutes later.
Investigators reported that the door leading to the backyard had a broken latch, a condition the family was aware of, and that the children had previously accessed the pool area.
Autopsy results completed on April 30 determined that both children died as a result of drowning combined with acute cocaine toxicity. Authorities confirmed the presence of the substance in both children’s systems at the time of their deaths.
Nicholson was taken into custody on May 11, 2026, in Florida by law enforcement working with a fugitive task force. She is currently being held while awaiting extradition back to Texas.
The case remains ongoing.
