Naoyuki Kanno Case: The Mystery Beneath a School That Still Raises Questions

In 1989, a disturbing discovery at an elementary school dormitory in Miyakojimura, Fukushima, Japan, left behind a case that continues to raise questions decades later.

Naoyuki Kanno, a 26-year-old man, was last seen on February 24 after telling his father he was going out with coworkers. His car was later found parked near the school, with the keys still in the ignition.

Four days later, on February 28, a 23-year-old teacher returned to her dormitory and noticed something unusual while using the restroom. Looking into the squat toilet, she saw what appeared to be a shoe. When she checked the sewage tank outside, she discovered human remains.

Emergency responders were called, and due to the narrow structure of the pipe, firefighters had to cut it open to recover Kanno’s body.

He was found positioned tightly inside the tank, holding a neatly folded shirt against his chest, with his face oriented toward the opening above. One of his shoes was located inside the tank, while the other had been found earlier near his car along a riverbank.

An autopsy determined his time of d*ath to be February 26, two days before his discovery. The cause was listed as hypothermia and circulatory complications. Only minor surface injuries were noted, with no signs of a struggle.

Authorities concluded that Kanno had entered the tank voluntarily and became trapped, classifying the case as an accident. The investigation was officially closed in 2004 when the statute of limitations expired.

However, the explanation did not convince everyone. More than 4,000 residents signed a petition requesting a re-examination of the case.

Additional details added to the mystery, including reports that the teacher had been receiving anonymous phone calls prior to the incident, which stopped after Kanno disappeared. It was also noted that a colleague connected to Kanno had died under separate circumstances one month earlier.

To this day, the case remains one of Japan’s most unusual and debated incidents, with lingering questions about what truly happened.
