A federal investigator has revealed that the man charged with igniting the catastrophic Palisades Fire was captured on surveillance cameras following fire engines to the scene of the initial blaze he allegedly started.
Michael Montevidoni, a special agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, presented testimony in a Los Angeles courtroom showing how 30-year-old Jonathan Rinderknecht circulated through the Pacific Palisades neighborhood in the early hours of January 1, 2025.
Security camera footage from residential properties documented Rinderknecht’s white Genesis GV60 in the area shortly after midnight. After placing a 911 call to report a brush fire that prosecutors claim he started near a hillside trail, Rinderknecht was recorded driving a short distance away. When a fire engine passed his location heading toward the reported fire, surveillance video showed his vehicle turning around and following the emergency vehicle at high speed.
The footage revealed Rinderknecht following firefighters through a security gate that crews had opened to access a cul-de-sac near the fire. His vehicle was later seen on additional cameras inside the restricted neighborhood. After exiting through the same gate, investigators say Rinderknecht parked nearby and spent approximately an hour recording video on his iPhone of firefighters battling the flames.
The initial fire, referred to as the Lachman Fire, was quickly controlled by firefighters. However, federal prosecutors argue that embers from this fire continued smoldering underground in root systems. When powerful Santa Ana winds struck Southern California on January 7, these hidden embers reignited, sparking the massive firestorm that devastated Pacific Palisades, Malibu, and surrounding communities.
Rinderknecht faces potential imprisonment of up to 45 years if convicted. The prosecution must prove that the Palisades Fire was a direct result of the earlier Lachman Fire and that Rinderknecht deliberately started the initial blaze.
During his testimony, Montevidoni detailed Rinderknecht’s digital activities leading up to the incident. The investigator told jurors that Rinderknecht had used ChatGPT to generate numerous images depicting apocalyptic forest fire scenarios where wealthy individuals remained safe behind protective barriers while impoverished people fled in terror. The suspect allegedly expressed frustration when the artificial intelligence tool declined to create images that met his specifications, citing content policy violations.
Prosecutors presented evidence that Rinderknecht was experiencing personal difficulties on New Year’s Eve, including unsuccessful attempts to secure a date or party invitation. He was working as an Uber driver that evening, and multiple passengers reported that he appeared agitated and spoke extensively about wealth inequality and societal injustices.
The location of the alleged arson holds personal significance for Rinderknecht, who previously lived in the area with a former romantic partner. Prosecutors displayed photographs of a substantial hillside residence overlooking the Pacific Ocean where Rinderknecht had resided.
Investigators identified Rinderknecht through cellphone location data and security camera analysis in the weeks following the fire. While authorities seized two mobile phones belonging to the suspect, they were unable to access complete data from his iPhone due to his refusal to provide the password. Investigators also discovered Tor browser software on his computer, which provides access to encrypted websites that remained beyond their reach.
Under cross-examination by defense attorney Steven Haney, Montevidoni confirmed he was not providing expert testimony on human behavior. Haney questioned whether frustration about corporate greed necessarily indicated arsonist tendencies.
District Judge Anne Hwang has restricted the defense from arguing that the Los Angeles Fire Department bears responsibility for inadequately extinguishing the Lachman Fire. The prosecution must establish that the Palisades Fire resulted from the earlier incident and would not have occurred without Rinderknecht’s alleged actions.
