Marine Le Pen, leader of France’s National Rally party, has declared her intention to compete in the 2027 presidential election, announcing her decision on Tuesday evening following a pivotal appeals court ruling that modified her previous ban from holding public office.
The Court of Appeal of Paris reduced Le Pen’s original five-year prohibition on seeking elected positions to 45 months, with 30 months suspended. The court maintained a financial penalty of approximately $114,000 related to embezzlement charges while imposing a three-year prison sentence, two years suspended and one year to be served through electronic monitoring.
The political leader’s announcement marked a dramatic reversal from her earlier position. She had previously indicated she would not campaign while wearing an electronic monitoring device, which would have been required during the presidential campaign period. Her decision to proceed stems from her plan to appeal to the Cour de Cassation, France’s highest court, which will suspend the sentence pending their review.
During an appearance on French television channel TF1, Le Pen explained her strategic calculation. She stated that the appeal process to the higher court would allow her to campaign without the ankle monitor, as the appeal suspends the effects of the current ruling. The timeline for the Cour de Cassation’s decision remains uncertain.
The legal proceedings stem from a March 2025 conviction involving Le Pen and 23 other National Rally members. The court found them guilty of misappropriating funds intended for parliamentary assistants in Brussels, redirecting approximately $24,500 in monthly payments to party lawmakers. Investigators estimated the total misappropriated funds reached nearly $5 million between 2004 and 2016.
Le Pen’s announcement has significant implications for the National Rally’s political strategy. Jordan Bardella, the 30-year-old party figure who has gained considerable popularity among younger voters with 2.3 million TikTok followers, had been widely expected to lead the presidential campaign in Le Pen’s absence. Bardella has been credited with modernizing the party’s image and distancing it from its controversial past.
Instead of stepping aside, Le Pen appears to be incorporating Bardella into her campaign structure. She has indicated that Bardella would serve as prime minister if she wins the presidency in May 2027. In her public statements following the television appearance, Le Pen emphasized a collaborative approach, repeatedly referring to launching the campaign together and calling for support for them as a team.
The decision introduces considerable uncertainty into French politics. When pressed during the television interview about what would happen if the Cour de Cassation upholds her conviction, Le Pen deflected, suggesting that the French people would ultimately judge the situation. The interviewer challenged this response, questioning whether France could be led by someone facing such legal uncertainty.
The National Rally has historically faced scrutiny in French politics due to its past associations with antisemitic and xenophobic positions, though the party has worked to reshape its image in recent years. Le Pen’s legal challenges and her decision to proceed with a presidential campaign despite them add another layer of complexity to France’s political landscape as the country approaches the 2027 election cycle.
