Two California residents face murder charges following the death of a 14-year-old developmentally disabled girl who authorities say died from starvation and neglect while under their care.
Megan Fredrick, 33, and Sherwood Johnson II, 37, served as primary caregivers for the teenager, who required continuous supervision and could only receive nutrition through a feeding tube. The Sutter County Sheriff’s Office alleges that in January 2025, the pair ceased providing the victim with essential nutrition and medical attention necessary for her survival.
Emergency responders were dispatched to a residence on the 9000 block of Rachel Street in Live Oak, California, following reports of an unresponsive juvenile. Despite attempts at life-saving measures by deputies and medical personnel, the 14-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.
The circumstances surrounding the death prompted an immediate investigation by detectives. Following examination by the coroner’s office, officials determined the cause of death to be starvation and neglect, with the manner of death classified as homicide.
The investigation revealed evidence that led authorities to obtain arrest warrants for both Fredrick and Johnson. However, the couple had relocated to Washington state following the incident.
Law enforcement tracked the pair to the Liberty Lake area of Washington state. The Spokane County Regional Anti-Violence Enforcement & Narcotics Task Force assisted in locating the suspects, who were subjects of nationwide extradition warrants.
On April 16, 2026, task force members conducting surveillance operations located Fredrick at a residence on East Mission Avenue. Johnson was found separately at a business location on East Appleway Avenue.
Both suspects were taken into custody without incident. Sutter County detectives traveled to Spokane to transport the pair back to California, where they face charges of murder and child abuse resulting in death.
Sutter County Sheriff Brandon Barnes addressed the tragedy in an official statement, expressing condolences for the young victim while commending his department’s handling of the sensitive case.
The investigation highlights the vulnerability of individuals requiring specialized care and the critical responsibilities of designated caregivers. The victim’s dependence on a feeding tube for all nutritional intake meant that any interruption in care would have severe consequences.
The case underscores the importance of proper oversight and accountability for those entrusted with caring for vulnerable individuals, particularly minors with developmental disabilities who cannot advocate for themselves or seek help independently.
Both suspects remain in custody awaiting formal proceedings in Sutter County. The prosecution will need to establish the timeline of events and demonstrate how the alleged neglect directly resulted in the victim’s death.
