A Florida man will spend the next 45 years in prison for the murder of his 64-year-old mother during a home burglary that turned deadly in August 2024. John Jacob Aylor, 39, received his sentence on Monday from Hillsborough County Circuit Judge G. Gregory Green after pleading guilty to second-degree murder with a weapon and armed burglary with battery.
The fatal incident occurred in the early morning hours of August 12, 2024, at Julie Aylor’s residence in Brandon, Florida, where she lived with two grandchildren. According to court documents, the defendant entered the home through a dog door at the rear of the property, a method he had reportedly used before to gain unauthorized access.
The violent encounter began around 4:30 a.m. when one of the children in the home woke to the sound of angry shouting. The young witness recognized the voice as belonging to her father, who did not reside at the property. Shortly after, the child heard her grandmother cry out the defendant’s nickname, followed by desperate pleas for help.
Investigators determined that Julie Aylor suffered at least ten stab wounds to her neck and torso during the attack. The medical examiner’s report confirmed these injuries as the cause of death. Law enforcement officers discovered two knives at the scene, including one from the home’s kitchen set that was covered in blood and another that had been broken during the assault. Forensic evidence later revealed the defendant’s palm print in suspected blood on one of the weapons.
Despite her severe injuries, the victim managed to crawl from her bedroom toward her granddaughter’s room while calling for assistance. One of the children contacted emergency services at approximately 4:50 a.m., reporting that their grandmother was severely injured. First responders arrived to find Julie Aylor deceased inside the residence.
The defendant fled the scene immediately following the attack. During their investigation, police canine units located the victim’s cellphone several houses away, with what appeared to be blood on the screen. Forensic analysis identified the defendant’s fingerprint on the device, suggesting he had taken it while leaving the property. A purple beach cruiser bicycle commonly used by the defendant was also found outside the home.
Law enforcement officers initially searched nearby homeless encampments before receiving information that led them to a residence less than one mile from the crime scene. The defendant was arrested there the following day and held without bond while the case proceeded through the judicial system.
According to Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister, the defendant had a documented history of criminal behavior and substance abuse issues. He had previously broken into his mother’s home to steal property. Investigators believe the fatal confrontation escalated when the defendant became angry after failing to find items worth taking during the burglary.
The case had initially involved first-degree murder charges, which could have resulted in a life sentence. However, prosecutors reached a plea agreement for reduced charges, citing concerns about requiring minor family members to testify about traumatic events. Hillsborough State Attorney Suzy Lopez stated that protecting the victim’s family, particularly the two children who witnessed aspects of the crime, was a primary consideration in the decision.
The victim had been the primary caregiver for the defendant’s 10-year-old daughter since birth, adding another layer of tragedy to the case. Family members were provided an opportunity to address the court during the sentencing hearing, which concluded legal proceedings more than a year after the fatal incident.
Given the defendant’s age, the 45-year sentence effectively ensures he will remain incarcerated for most of his remaining life, according to prosecutors.
