A 64-year-old Florida man has been sentenced to 364 days of probation following a fatal golf cart accident that claimed the life of his 58-year-old wife last year. Angelo Theodosiou will also have his driver’s license suspended for six months after pleading no contest to driving under the influence charges.
The incident occurred on November 30, 2025, at approximately 10:45 p.m. in a St. Johns County neighborhood. Christina Theodosiou fell from the golf cart her husband was operating and struck her head on the ground. Emergency responders transported her to Jacksonville Memorial Trauma Hospital, where medical staff recorded a Glasgow Coma Scale score of 3 during her helicopter transport, indicating severe brain injury. She subsequently died from her injuries.
According to arrest records, law enforcement officers responding to the scene determined Angelo Theodosiou was the at-fault driver. Officers observed several indicators of intoxication, including bloodshot and watery eyes with reddened sclera. They also detected the odor of alcoholic beverages from approximately three feet away in an open area.
Despite being informed that a DUI investigation was underway, Theodosiou declined to participate in standardized field sobriety testing. After his arrest, he repeatedly questioned officers about what was happening and why he was being detained. At the county jail, authorities read him the implied consent warning multiple times. While he initially agreed to provide a breath sample, he later recanted and failed to complete the test.
St. Johns County Circuit Judge Casey L. Woolsey handed down the sentence on Tuesday after Theodosiou entered his no contest plea. As part of the plea agreement, prosecutors dropped an additional charge of refusing to submit to DUI testing.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, Theodosiou’s attorney, L. Lee Lockett, described his client as heartbroken and distraught over his wife’s death. The attorney maintained that his client was not impaired at the time of the accident, though this contradicted the observations made by law enforcement officers at the scene.
Family members of the couple have reportedly stood behind Angelo Theodosiou following the incident, offering their support during this difficult period.
The fatal accident has raised concerns among residents about golf cart safety in the neighborhood, where such vehicles are commonly used for transportation. Christopher Barnes, a neighbor who witnessed the aftermath of the crash, told reporters that given the high volume of golf cart traffic in the area, residents had anticipated that an accident might eventually occur at that particular intersection.
Another neighbor, Yariela Farkas, emphasized the importance of responsible operation of all vehicles, regardless of type. She stressed that golf carts, while smaller and slower than traditional automobiles, still pose significant dangers when operated improperly or while intoxicated.
The case highlights ongoing safety concerns surrounding golf cart usage in residential communities, particularly in Florida where these vehicles are prevalent in many neighborhoods. While golf carts may seem less dangerous than traditional vehicles, they lack many safety features found in cars, such as airbags and seat belts, making accidents potentially severe despite lower speeds.
The sentencing concludes legal proceedings in a case that has drawn attention to the responsibilities of golf cart operators and the potential consequences of impaired driving, regardless of the vehicle type.
