A former firefighter and EMT is facing multiple charges after authorities say he traveled across state lines following a breakup, leading to a dangerous confrontation.
Brian J. Lanzim, 37, who previously served with the Toms River Fire Department and South Toms River EMS in New Jersey, is accused of driving approximately eight hours from Maine to New Jersey on April 29, 2026.
According to prosecutors, Lanzim had recently experienced personal and professional setbacks, including the loss of a security job and the end of a long-term relationship. The breakup reportedly occurred over a video call that same evening, after which a temporary restraining order was filed.
Authorities allege that during the call and in messages that followed, Lanzim made statements indicating potential harm toward individuals connected to his former partner.
Police were already present at the woman’s family home in South Toms River after receiving alerts about the situation. Officers evacuated those inside before Lanzim arrived at approximately 8:45 p.m.
Investigators say Lanzim drove his vehicle onto the property and attempted to approach the residence. He then exited the vehicle holding a firearm and tried to gain entry.
Officers ordered him to drop the weapon. When he did not comply, an officer discharged his weapon, striking Lanzim.
He survived the incident and was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center for treatment before being transferred to custody on May 4.
Lanzim now faces multiple attempted m*rder charges, and the case remains ongoing.
