In 2008, an 18-year-old left his home for a walk in Colorado and never returned, only to be found seven years later in a place no one thought to look.
Joshua Maddux disappeared on May 8, 2008, after telling his sister he was going for a walk. Days later, he was reported missing, and searches of the surrounding area turned up nothing. Over time, the case went cold.
In August 2015, workers demolishing an abandoned cabin just two blocks from Joshua’s home made a shocking discovery inside the chimney.
His remains were found inside, positioned upside down in a confined space.
Dental records later confirmed his identity.
Investigators noted several unusual details at the scene. Joshua’s clothing was found neatly placed inside the cabin near the fireplace, separate from where he was discovered.
The initial ruling suggested an accidental death, with the possibility that he had entered the chimney and become trapped. Weather conditions at the time supported the theory of exposure.
However, questions soon emerged.
The property owner stated the chimney had been secured with a barrier designed to prevent entry. Authorities later acknowledged that the position of the body raised additional concerns about how he ended up there.
The official findings were eventually updated to include multiple possibilities, including accident and foul play.
