The storm was already hitting.
But his partner was still outside.
In Deer Park, Texas, Officer Joel Nitchman had just returned to the station with his K-9 partner, Roni, when the weather suddenly turned violent. The sky darkened, winds intensified, and within moments, the situation escalated into a dangerous storm.
Roni was still inside the patrol car.
For Officer Nitchman, leaving him there was not an option.
He later explained that the risk of debris striking the vehicle, or worse, was too great. Roni wasn’t just part of the job. He had been his partner for years, working side by side since 2018.
So he ran into the storm.
Surveillance footage captured the moment, heavy rain, strong winds, and flying debris surrounding him as he made his way to the vehicle. Conditions were chaotic, and visibility was nearly gone.
When he reached the car, another challenge appeared.
Roni hesitated.
Faced with the noise and danger, the dog froze, something anyone might do in that moment. But Officer Nitchman stayed calm, working to guide him out and back toward safety.
Step by step, they made their way back.
Even getting inside wasn’t easy. Debris had partially blocked the entrance, forcing them to push through before finally reaching shelter.
Both made it.
Afterward, Officer Nitchman described what drove him to act:
“I love that dog. He’s my hip attachment almost every day of the week. He’s a part of our family. We can’t leave a loved one like that.”
It’s a simple truth.
In moments of danger, love doesn’t hesitate.
It moves forward, no matter the storm.
