In 1973, a normal evening in Ann Arbor, Michigan ended with a disappearance that has never been explained.
Sandra “Sandy” Horwath, a 33-year-old mother of three, returned home with her daughters on October 1 after a trip to the mall. That night followed a routine, a phone call, putting the children to bed, and preparing for the next day.
By morning, she was gone.
Her daughters woke up between 6:00 and 6:30 a.m. to an empty home. Sandra had not gone to work at the University of Michigan Hospital, something completely out of character. Outside, the flowerbeds appeared disturbed, suggesting something had happened during the night. Her car and personal belongings were still there, but her purse was missing.
A neighbor later reported hearing a noise outside around 10:50 p.m., but no one checked at the time.
As investigators looked into her disappearance, attention turned to a man Sandra had once known, Gary Addison Taylor. He had a long history of violent offenses and had previously been connected to attacks involving women. Around the time Sandra vanished, he abruptly left Michigan and stopped attending required psychiatric appointments.
In 1975, Taylor was arrested in Texas and later admitted to multiple killings across several states. Despite acknowledging he knew Sandra, he denied involvement in her disappearance and has refused to cooperate with investigators for decades.
Sandra Horwath has never been found.
More than 50 years later, her case remains open, with her family still waiting for answers to what happened that night.
