In 2015, a young medical student walked away from her safari camp in Uganda and was never seen again, leaving behind a case filled with unanswered questions.
Sophia Koetsier, 21, had recently completed her medical internship in Kampala and was traveling with friends before returning home to the Netherlands. On October 28, 2015, she left her accommodation at a safari camp in Murchison Falls National Park during the early hours of the morning and disappeared.
In the days leading up to her disappearance, those around her had noticed unusual behavior. Concerns had been raised about her condition, and there had been discussions about ending the trip early to seek medical care.
Despite those concerns, the group continued their journey.
Search efforts began quickly, but only limited items were found. Personal belongings were discovered near a river, and additional clothing was later located in the same area under unusual circumstances.
Investigators ruled out several initial possibilities and concluded that the available evidence pointed toward the involvement of at least one unknown individual.
DNA analysis confirmed Sophia’s presence on the recovered items and identified an additional unknown profile, further deepening the mystery.
Questions were also raised about the organization of the trip itself, including the qualifications of the tour guide involved.
Years later, legal proceedings connected to the case have continued, but no definitive answers have been reached.
Sophia Koetsier’s body has never been found.
The case remains open, with key questions still unanswered about what happened that night in the park.
