A 7-year-old girl is gone, and prosecutors say her death was not sudden, but the result of months of alleged abuse that went unnoticed for far too long.
Jor’Dynn Duncan was rushed to the hospital on December 29, 2025, after emergency responders were called to a home in Suffolk County, New York. By the time she arrived, it was too late.
She was pronounced dead shortly after.
What investigators uncovered next painted a far more disturbing picture.
According to the Suffolk County Medical Examiner, Jor’Dynn died from a severe, untreated infection connected to multiple injuries. Authorities documented approximately 90 injuries across her body.
Prosecutors say those injuries were not isolated.
They allege there was a prolonged pattern of harm, restraint, and failure to seek medical care over the course of nearly a year.
At the center of the case is Emily Kelly, 50, the fiancée of the child’s father, who was reportedly incarcerated. Kelly had taken custody of Jor’Dynn in late 2024 and later obtained full custody in April 2025.
Investigators say evidence gathered from digital devices, including photos and videos, suggests the alleged abuse began as early as January 2025.
There were also warning signs.
Court records show Jor’Dynn missed around 40 days of school within a six-month period. Explanations reportedly included illnesses, family emergencies, and travel, reasons prosecutors now say may have been used to conceal what was happening.
The case expanded beyond one individual.
Kelly, along with her mother, 75-year-old Barbara Renner, and her 24-year-old daughter, Elyssa Seymore, have all been indicted on charges related to the case.
Kelly faces the most serious charge, second-degree murder, along with additional counts including unlawful imprisonment and endangering the welfare of a child.
Renner is charged with manslaughter and child endangerment.
Seymore faces charges tied to unlawful imprisonment and endangering a child.
As the case moves forward, it raises difficult questions about missed warning signs, system failures, and how prolonged harm can go undetected.
At the center of it all is a child whose life should have been protected.
