A 28-year-old man has been sentenced to 45 years in state prison following his conviction for organized retail theft involving hundreds of Lego sets and other merchandise across multiple Texas cities.
Winston Love was convicted on June 4 of organized retail theft with a deadly weapon, marking the first jury trial under Texas’s newly strengthened Organized Retail Theft statute. The law, which took effect September 1, 2025, enhances penalties for retail theft operations and reclassifies thefts between $2,500 and $30,000 as third-degree felonies.
Tarrant County District Attorney Phil Sorrells announced the sentencing on Wednesday, detailing Love’s extensive theft operation that targeted retail stores throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. Over a two-month period, Love allegedly stole more than 200 Lego sets from Target stores in Grapevine, Euless, Mansfield, and Watauga. His theft activities extended beyond toy building sets to include coffee makers, vacuum cleaners, and PlayStation controllers.
The case highlights a growing trend in organized retail crime, with Lego products becoming increasingly attractive targets due to their high resale value on secondary markets. Law enforcement officials indicate that the popularity and collectible nature of certain Lego sets make them particularly lucrative for theft rings operating across state lines.
Love’s criminal activities came to a head on October 27, 2025, when he fled a Mansfield Target store at 7:40 a.m. after being recognized and called by name by a loss prevention officer. During his escape, he drove erratically, traveling on the wrong side of the road and creating dangerous conditions for other motorists, including school buses carrying children.
The defendant was ultimately arrested on October 31 after fleeing another Target store in Watauga with approximately $1,200 worth of merchandise. Police investigations revealed Love’s suspected involvement in 23 separate thefts from Target stores across Texas cities including Dallas, Irving, Plano, Fort Worth, Flower Mound, Lewisville, Frisco, Arlington, Temple, and Harker Heights. The total value of stolen merchandise from these incidents is estimated at over $37,000.
Law enforcement officials believe Love was operating as part of a larger theft ring with connections between Oklahoma and Texas. His criminal history extends beyond the current conviction, with court records showing 11 pending theft charges under $2,500 across Dallas, Denton, Collin, and Comal counties. He also faces an additional count of organized retail theft valued between $2,500 and $30,000 in Collin County.
The case represents a significant application of Texas’s enhanced retail theft legislation, which aims to combat increasingly sophisticated retail crime operations. The 45-year sentence reflects both the serious nature of organized retail theft and the state’s determination to prosecute these crimes aggressively.
