A single photograph captures one of the most shocking and controversial moments in modern criminal history — the seconds before a father took justice into his own hands.
On March 16, 1984, authorities escorted Jeff Doucet through Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport in handcuffs.
Doucet had been arrested in California after kidnapping 11-year-old Jody Plauché, taking him across the country, and sexually abusing him while hiding in an Anaheim motel.
He was being returned to Louisiana to face charges.
Unbeknownst to law enforcement, members of the media, or Doucet himself, Jody’s father, Gary Plauché, was waiting inside the airport.
Plauché had concealed a .38 revolver in his boot and positioned himself near a row of payphones along the path officers would take.
As Doucet walked past, surrounded by officers, Plauché stepped forward.
Without warning, he turned, raised the weapon, and fired a single shot at point-blank range into Doucet’s head.
Doucet died instantly.
The entire incident was captured on live television, as news crews were present to document the suspect’s transfer.
The footage quickly spread across the country, turning the case into one of the most widely recognized examples of vigilante justice in the United States.
Decades later, the moment remains deeply controversial — raising questions about justice, grief, and how far a parent can be pushed when their child has been harmed.
