The father of a murder victim is facing backlash after comments he made about the convicted defendant quickly spread online.
Jeff Metcalf, whose son Austin Metcalf was killed in 2025, recently appeared on a podcast following the sentencing of Karmelo Anthony, who received a 35-year prison term from a Collin County jury.
During the appearance on the JinxedSip podcast hosted by Sarah Fields, Metcalf referred to Anthony using a nickname that many critics have described as racially charged.
Metcalf said he was attempting to push back against what he viewed as efforts to portray Anthony as innocent, but the remarks drew immediate reaction across social media.
In addition to the nickname, Metcalf criticized Anthony’s parents, calling his father a coward and making additional comments about his upbringing.
At the same time, Metcalf also spoke about forgiveness, saying he has chosen to let go of anger so it does not consume him. He added that he hopes Anthony reflects on his actions during his time in prison.
Earlier in the legal process, Metcalf had emphasized that the case should not be viewed through a racial lens, stating it was about right and wrong.
However, his recent remarks have reignited debate online, with critics pointing to both the nickname and broader comments as crossing a line.
Metcalf has denied accusations of racism, stating that skin color does not matter to him.
The controversy continues to generate discussion as reactions remain divided.
