Tensions reached a breaking point in Albania’s capital city Thursday as violent confrontations between law enforcement and demonstrators unfolded outside the parliament building in Tirana. The clashes marked a significant escalation in ongoing protests against a controversial luxury resort development planned for the Zvernec nature reserve on Albania’s southwestern coast.
The proposed resort project, which has connections to Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, has become a lightning rod for public discontent since late May when construction equipment and barbed-wire fencing appeared on local beaches. What began as peaceful demonstrations has now transformed into increasingly confrontational encounters between citizens and authorities.
Thursday’s events represented the second major confrontation this week. Protesters attempted to prevent lawmakers from entering the parliament building, forming crowds that directly challenged police lines. Law enforcement responded with riot control measures including tear gas, pepper spray, and water cannons to disperse the gathering. The situation deteriorated as some demonstrators attempted to break through police formations.
The toll from Thursday’s clashes was substantial. According to official police reports, fifteen officers sustained injuries requiring hospital treatment, with four remaining hospitalized. Twenty-five demonstrators were taken into custody during the confrontations. The health ministry confirmed that two protesters also required hospital care for their injuries.
The violence extended beyond the immediate parliament area. Witnesses observed protesters damaging an unoccupied police vehicle on a nearby street, smashing its windows as crowds were forced back from the main demonstration site. The escalation represents a stark departure from the predominantly peaceful nature of the daily gatherings that have drawn thousands of participants since the movement gained momentum.
Earlier in the week, on Tuesday, authorities arrested six individuals when demonstrators threw eggs at vehicles carrying lawmakers to the parliament building. These incidents reflect growing frustration among protesters who view the resort development as emblematic of broader governance issues.
The luxury hotel project was initially announced in 2024, but public opposition intensified dramatically in late May 2026 when physical preparations for construction became visible. The appearance of bulldozers and security fencing on beaches within the Zvernec nature reserve catalyzed widespread public demonstrations.
Protesters have expanded their demands beyond stopping the resort development. Many are now calling for Prime Minister Edi Rama to resign, citing concerns about transparency in government decision-making processes. The demonstrators argue that the approval process for the resort lacked adequate public consultation and environmental consideration.
The Zvernec area holds particular significance as a protected natural environment on Albania’s coast. The prospect of luxury development in this location has united various segments of Albanian society in opposition, from environmental activists to citizens concerned about government accountability.
