Man Pleads Guilty in Fatal Shooting of 9-Year-Old Girl During Apartment Complex Dispute

A 23-year-old New Jersey man has pleaded guilty to aggravated manslaughter in the 2022 shooting death of a 9-year-old girl who was playing outside an apartment complex when gunfire erupted during a confrontation between feuding parties.

Isiah M. Roberts, who was 19 at the time of the incident, admitted responsibility for the death of Sequoya Bacon-Jones, a fourth-grade student from Trenton who was struck by gunfire while attempting to flee the courtyard area where she had been playing with her brother and friends.

The fatal shooting occurred at the Kingsbury apartment complex after Roberts was summoned to the location by family members. According to statements made by Roberts’ attorney, John W. Hartmann, during court proceedings last Thursday, the defendant’s mother and sister contacted him about an ongoing dispute that had originated on social media platform Facebook.

The attorney explained that Roberts’ sister had been involved in a physical altercation at the apartments, which prompted the family’s call for Roberts to come to the scene. Upon arrival, Roberts was informed about an individual described as a family adversary who authorities later identified as his intended target.

After obtaining a 9mm pistol from one of the apartments, Roberts encountered the individual outside. Believing this person was armed with a handgun, Roberts discharged his weapon multiple times in the courtyard area. During the shooting, Roberts fired an initial two rounds, causing people in the vicinity to scatter, followed by four additional shots.

Sequoya Bacon-Jones was struck by gunfire as she attempted to run to safety with her brother. The children’s mother, Sacha Bacon-Jones, was present in the courtyard when the shooting occurred and immediately rushed to aid her daughter, along with other residents, before emergency responders arrived at the scene.

In a 2022 interview with local media, Sacha Bacon-Jones recounted the traumatic moments following the shooting. She described finding her daughter on the ground, noting that the child was not crying but making moaning sounds while reaching out to her. The mother expressed disbelief at the tragic scene unfolding before her.

During the court proceedings, Hartmann acknowledged that while Roberts did not specifically intend to harm the young victim, his actions demonstrated a reckless disregard for human life that justified the manslaughter charge. The defense attorney characterized the underlying dispute as stemming from social media tensions that escalated into real-world violence.

The victim’s mother, speaking at a press conference following her daughter’s death, described the conflict that led to the shooting as centered around trivial social media disagreements. She lamented the permanent loss of her child and the inability to create new memories with her daughter.

As part of the plea agreement reached with prosecutors, Roberts faces a prison sentence ranging from 15 to 18 years. His formal sentencing hearing has been scheduled for June.

The case highlights the devastating consequences that can result when online disputes escalate into physical confrontations. The victim, described by her mother as her “little girl,” was an innocent bystander who became a casualty of violence that originated from social media tensions between adults.

The incident occurred in a residential area where children regularly played outdoors, transforming what should have been a safe space for neighborhood youth into the scene of a fatal shooting that claimed the life of a child who had no involvement in the underlying dispute.
