A 30-year-old man has been arrested following a stabbing attack that claimed the life of a 59-year-old public school teacher and left her 25-year-old daughter hospitalized in stable condition at a California residence.
Sergio Fraire was taken into custody Monday evening on charges of murder and attempted murder in connection with the morning assault that occurred at a single-family home on the 2800 block of North Brighton Street in Burbank. Police reported that Fraire was arrested without incident at a residence where he had been staying, and investigators recovered evidence related to the crime at that location.
The victims have been identified as Arti Varma, 59, who succumbed to her injuries despite medical intervention, and her daughter Meera Varma, 25, who remains hospitalized in stable condition. The younger Varma is known for her work as a mental health advocate and public speaker who has collaborated with prominent national figures including President Joe Biden, First Lady Dr. Jill Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and media personality Oprah Winfrey.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene around 6 a.m. Monday following reports of two individuals with stab wounds inside the residence. Both victims were immediately transported to a local hospital for treatment. Despite lifesaving efforts by medical personnel, Arti Varma died from her injuries.
The victims’ husband and father was in India at the time of the attack. A family friend and neighbor, Victor Goli, described the man’s emotional state upon learning of the tragedy, noting he was crying and had difficulty speaking when he received the news thousands of miles away from home.
Investigators conducted what they described as a comprehensive investigation that included interviewing witnesses, collecting physical evidence, and reviewing surveillance footage from the area. This investigative work led them to identify Fraire as a person of interest in the case. Subsequently, law enforcement executed a search warrant at the residence where Fraire was staying, which resulted in the recovery of additional evidence.
The relationship between Fraire and the victims remains under investigation, as does the motive for the attack. Police have not released information about whether the suspect knew the victims prior to the incident.
Arti Varma was remembered by neighbors and friends as a beloved educator who was passionate about working with young people. Community members described her as a kind person who was well-loved in the neighborhood.
Meera Varma, who has been public about her mental health advocacy work, had previously spoken about the close relationship she shared with her mother. In a 2023 profile, she credited her mother and grandmother as pillars of support who contributed significantly to her resilience and strength in addressing mental health challenges. She had described her mother as one of the most important people in her life.
The investigation into the stabbing attack continues as detectives work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident. Fraire remains in custody pending formal charges and court proceedings.
