15-Year-Old Stabbed After Intervening to Protect Mother and Child from Harassment

A 15-year-old boy is recovering from stab wounds after intervening to protect a mother and her young daughter from alleged harassment in Louisville, Kentucky, on Saturday evening. The incident occurred as crowds were dispersing from the annual Thunder Over Louisville fireworks display.

Vasilis Sakellaridis, 45, faces multiple charges including first-degree assault, first-degree fleeing or evading police, second-degree disorderly conduct, and alcohol intoxication in a public place, according to Louisville Metro Department of Corrections records. He stands accused of stabbing Da’Jon Hayes-Burr, the teenage intervener.

The confrontation began when Kristyn Stasel was walking to her vehicle with her 12-year-old daughter after the fireworks show concluded. According to Stasel’s account, a man approached them and made an inappropriate sexual comment. When Stasel informed him that her daughter was only 12 years old, the man allegedly responded with a disturbing remark suggesting age was not a barrier.

Stasel reported that she began shouting loudly to attract attention and alert others to the situation. Rather than leaving the scene, the man allegedly moved aggressively toward her. At this point, Da’Jon Hayes-Burr, who was nearby with a group of other teenagers, heard the commotion and moved to assist.

The situation escalated when the suspect allegedly attempted to strike the group of teens who had intervened. The young people managed to bring him to the ground during the altercation. Stasel continued walking with her daughter, believing the incident had concluded, but the man returned to the scene.

During this second confrontation, the suspect allegedly stabbed Da’Jon in the stomach before continuing to advance toward Stasel and her daughter. The situation was brought under control when approximately twelve military personnel and police officers present in the area tackled and restrained the suspect. Witnesses reported that multiple officers were required to subdue him.

Da’Jon Hayes-Burr was transported to a medical facility for treatment of his stab wound. While his injuries are not considered life-threatening, medical professionals indicate his recovery process will be extensive. A fundraising campaign has been established to assist with his medical expenses and support during his rehabilitation.

Stasel expressed profound gratitude for the teenager’s intervention, stating that the group of young people who stepped forward potentially prevented a more serious incident from occurring. She emphasized that while Da’Jon may not view himself as heroic, his actions demonstrated exceptional courage in protecting strangers from potential harm.

Sakellaridis appeared for arraignment on Monday, where he entered a plea of not guilty to all charges. The court set his bond at $25,000 cash, and he remains in custody at the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections.

The incident has drawn attention to the bravery of the young intervener and raised discussions about public safety at large community events. Local authorities have not released additional details about security measures or any potential changes to event protocols following the incident.

The case remains under investigation as prosecutors prepare to move forward with the charges against Sakellaridis. Da’Jon Hayes-Burr continues his recovery, with community members rallying to support the teenager who placed himself at risk to protect others.
