Delphi Murders Case: Abigail Williams, Liberty German, and the Ongoing Trial of Richard Allen

On February 13, 2017, Abigail “Abby” Williams, 13, and Liberty “Libby” German, 14, went for a walk along the Monon High Bridge Trail in Delphi, Indiana. The two best friends were enjoying an unusually warm winter afternoon in their quiet hometown.

When Abby Williams and Libby German did not return, their families quickly raised concern. A search effort began that same evening, drawing in volunteers and local authorities across Carroll County.

The following day, the girls were found in a wooded area near the trail. Investigators later described the scene as unusual and deeply disturbing, marking the beginning of one of the most widely followed cases in modern true crime.

One of the most critical pieces of evidence came from Liberty German’s phone. Before the incident, she recorded a short video and audio clip of a man walking behind them on the bridge. The audio, which included the words “Down the hill,” became central to the investigation and was released publicly by the FBI and Indiana State Police.

For several years, the case remained unsolved despite national attention and thousands of tips. Authorities released sketches and continued to appeal to the public, but no arrest was made for more than five years.

In October 2022, Delphi resident Richard Allen, a 50-year-old pharmacy technician, was arrested and charged in connection with the case. Investigators stated that ballistic evidence, including a bullet found near the scene, was linked to a firearm associated with Allen. Witness statements also placed a man matching his description on the trail that day.

Prosecutors have alleged that Richard Allen acted alone, while his defense team has argued that the case relies heavily on circumstantial evidence. His attorneys have also raised concerns about his treatment while in custody, adding further complexity to the legal proceedings.

In 2023, unsealed court documents introduced additional claims referencing ritualistic elements, though prosecutors have strongly disputed these assertions. The developments have drawn widespread attention and debate.

As of late 2025, Richard Allen remains in custody awaiting trial. Meanwhile, the families of Abigail Williams and Liberty German continue to attend court hearings, often wearing purple in honor of the girls.

Nearly a decade later, the Delphi case remains one of the most closely followed investigations in the United States, defined not only by the evidence and legal battle, but by the memory of two young friends whose lives ended far too soon.
