In April 2009, 17-year-old Brittanee Drexel left her home in Rochester, New York, after a disagreement with her mother and traveled to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, for spring break with friends. What was meant to be a short trip quickly turned into one of the most widely followed missing-person cases in the country.
On the night of April 25, Brittanee left the hotel where she was staying and began walking alone along Ocean Boulevard toward another nearby hotel. The distance was less than two miles. She never arrived.
Security footage captured her walking that night. After that moment, she disappeared.
Investigators later analyzed her phone activity, which initially placed her in the Myrtle Beach area. Subsequent data suggested movement south toward Georgetown County, a region known for its marshland and rural terrain. Despite extensive searches, interviews, and tips from across the country, no confirmed trace of Brittanee was found for years.
The case remained unresolved for more than a decade.
In 2022, authorities announced a breakthrough. Raymond Moody was arrested and charged in connection with Brittanee’s death. Investigators stated that he abducted her the night she vanished.
Later that year, Moody pleaded guilty to kidnapping, rape, and murder. He was sentenced to life in prison.
He also led investigators to a remote area in Georgetown County, where human remains believed to be Brittanee’s were recovered, finally bringing long-awaited answers to her family.
The case is often remembered for how an ordinary night turned into a years-long mystery, and how it took more than a decade for the truth to come to light.
