In September 2015, a case in Bristol, England, drew widespread attention after a violent acid attack left lasting consequences for the victim.
According to prosecutors, Berlinah Wallace went to the apartment of her former partner, Mark van Dongen, late at night and threw sulphuric acid on him while he was in bed.
The attack caused severe and life-altering injuries. Van Dongen suffered burns to a significant portion of his body, resulting in extensive medical treatment, including multiple surgeries and skin removal procedures. He also lost vision in one eye and most of the vision in the other, along with permanent scarring.
He spent over a year in hospital undergoing treatment and recovery.
In 2017, van Dongen traveled to Belgium, where euthanasia is legally permitted under strict conditions. In January 2018, at the age of 29, he died.
Wallace was charged in connection with the attack. In court, she was found guilty of throwing a corrosive substance with intent but was not convicted of murder. She was sentenced to 12 years in prison.
The case became one of the most widely discussed acid attack cases in the UK, highlighting both the immediate and long-term impact of such incidents.
