A rare and extraordinary medical case has drawn attention after a woman who believed she could no longer have children discovered she was pregnant under highly unusual circumstances.
Suze Lopez, 41, had been trying for a second child for years but believed it was no longer possible due to a massive 22-pound ovarian tumor growing in her abdomen. She had also been experiencing irregular periods and ongoing abdominal discomfort, which she attributed to the tumor.
When a pregnancy test came back positive, doctors initially questioned the result. There were concerns it could be a false positive or even related to a more serious condition, including ovarian cancer.
Further testing, however, revealed something unexpected. Despite the large tumor, Lopez was pregnant.
Doctors later confirmed the pregnancy was abdominal ectopic — an extremely rare condition where the fetus develops outside the uterus. In this case, the baby had grown in a small space near Lopez’s liver, with part of his body resting against the uterus. The size of the tumor made the pregnancy especially difficult to detect.
Abdominal ectopic pregnancies are considered high-risk and rarely progress to full term. Despite this, Lopez’s pregnancy advanced to nearly full term.
A specialized medical team prepared for a complex delivery, which required both safely delivering the baby and removing the tumor.
Lopez gave birth to a baby boy, Ryu Lopez, who weighed 8 pounds. He was born healthy, with only minor concerns regarding his lungs, which improved shortly after birth.
The procedure was intensive. Lopez required 11 units of blood due to significant hemorrhaging during delivery. Despite the complications, both mother and child survived and recovered.
Medical professionals have described the case as extremely rare. Lopez later shared that she views the experience as a miracle, expressing gratitude for the outcome and her child’s survival.
