At 45 years old, a chimpanzee named Copa had stopped eating, drinking, and responding to those around him.
Caretakers at the sanctuary grew concerned as he turned away from food, ignored water, and refused all attempts at comfort. Veterinarians eventually concluded that his time was coming to an end.
But for his longtime keeper, Anna, that wasn’t something she could accept — not without being there for him.
Anna had spent 15 years caring for Copa, the sanctuary’s oldest resident. He had been rescued years earlier from a roadside zoo, where he lived for decades in harsh conditions. Even after being brought to safety, the trauma remained visible in his behavior. Trust didn’t come easily.
Except with Anna.
As his health declined, Copa became increasingly withdrawn. His movements slowed, his energy faded, and for two days, he sat quietly in the corner of his enclosure, facing away from everyone.
The veterinary team advised that there was nothing more they could do.
But Anna couldn’t bear the thought of him leaving the world feeling alone or afraid.
So she made a decision.
Breaking protocol, she entered his enclosure, carrying a small comb — something he had always found comfort in. She sat beside him and gently lifted his weakened body into her lap.
He had grown light, his breathing shallow.
As she softly combed his thinning gray hair, something changed.
He exhaled deeply.
For the first time in days, his body relaxed.
Anna spoke softly to him, reassuring him that he was safe, that he didn’t need to be afraid anymore.
In that moment, Copa rested his head against her, no longer withdrawn, no longer distant.
He passed not as an animal alone in a corner, but beside the one person he trusted most.
For Anna, and for those who witnessed it, the moment was a reminder that care, trust, and connection can remain until the very end.
