Wisconsin Stepmother Pleads in Severe Child Neglect Case

A child neglect case in Outagamie County, Wisconsin, has drawn widespread attention after a 14-year-old girl was found in critical condition last year.

Melissa Goodman, 51, entered a no-contest plea on May 6, 2026, to charges including chronic neglect of a child causing great bodily harm, chronic neglect causing emotional damage, and false imprisonment. Several additional charges were dismissed as part of the agreement. Her sentencing is scheduled for July 1, 2026.

The case began on August 21, 2025, when the girl’s father, Walter Goodman, called emergency services from their trailer home in the town of Oneida. First responders found the teenager in serious condition and transported her to a hospital.

Medical staff reported that she was severely underweight, weighing just 35 pounds, and suffering from multiple health issues. These included untreated diabetes, respiratory failure, cardiac complications, hepatitis, pancreatitis, hypothermia, and dangerously low blood sugar levels.

Investigators later alleged that the girl had been confined to her bedroom for extended periods, sometimes locked from the outside and monitored by a camera. Reports indicated she had not received medical care for approximately five years and was provided with limited food.

Evidence presented in court included phone records and messages linked to Melissa Goodman, referencing punishments such as removing the child’s bed and forcing her to sleep on the floor. Investigators also cited images showing the girl in minimal clothing on a bare surface.

Authorities arrested four individuals in November 2025 in connection with the case: Walter Goodman, Melissa Goodman, Savanna LeFever, and Kayla Stemler. All were charged with multiple counts related to neglect and confinement.

Melissa Goodman is the first among the four to enter a plea. The remaining three defendants continue to face charges and are awaiting further court proceedings.

The case has raised serious concerns about prolonged neglect and the importance of intervention when warning signs are present.
