A tragic incident in Mississippi has left a 1-year-old child dead following a police shooting outside a Walmart.
According to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation and the Mississippi Department of Public Safety, officers from the Senatobia Police Department and the Tate County Sheriff’s Office responded to a reported shoplifting call.
Authorities say officers observed two adults and a child running from the store and entering a vehicle.
When officers attempted to stop the car, officials reported that the driver allegedly drove toward officers, nearly striking one of them.
An officer then fired shots into the vehicle.
The car left the scene and was later driven to a nearby hospital, where the child, identified as Kohen Wiley, was pronounced dead.
A woman inside the vehicle was reported to be in critical condition, while the child’s mother was not physically injured, according to family members.
Witnesses at the scene described the situation as unfolding rapidly and questioned whether alternative actions could have been taken instead of firing into a vehicle with a child inside.
The family is now seeking answers as the investigation continues.
Authorities have not released further details at this time.
