Nearly seven years after the death of 3-year-old Matthew Maison, new developments in the case have led to a major legal outcome in Michigan.
On November 5, 2025, 33-year-old Amanda Maison pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in St. Clair County Circuit Court. The plea relates to the 2018 death of her son, who was found unresponsive in his bed by babysitters on February 18 of that year.
For several years, the case remained unresolved. In April 2025, however, Maison and her former boyfriend, Maurice Houle, were arrested after investigators identified new evidence.
Prosecutors alleged that Matthew had been subjected to repeated abuse prior to his death. During court proceedings, authorities stated that the actions were part of a broader pattern of harm and concealment.
During her plea hearing, Maison admitted to acts of violence against her son and acknowledged that she had enabled and concealed abuse carried out by Houle. She also admitted to providing false information to Child Protective Services and investigators during the initial inquiry.
Officials described the situation as a deliberate effort to hide the circumstances surrounding the child’s death.
As part of the plea agreement, the original first-degree murder charge was dismissed. Maison has also agreed to testify against Houle.
Maurice Houle has pleaded not guilty and remains in custody. His trial is expected to take place in early 2026.
Sentencing for Amanda Maison has not yet been scheduled. Under Michigan law, second-degree murder carries the possibility of life imprisonment with parole eligibility.
The case continues to be followed closely as further proceedings move forward.
