The case of Tylee Ryan and Joshua “JJ” Vallow became one of the most widely followed criminal investigations in recent years, drawing national attention due to its complexity and tragic outcome.
Tylee Ryan, 16, and her younger brother JJ Vallow, 7, were last seen in September 2019 after relocating with their mother, Lori Vallow, to Rexburg, Idaho. Concerns quickly grew when their whereabouts could not be confirmed, and Lori Vallow declined to provide information to authorities.
As the investigation continued, Lori Vallow left the state with her husband, Chad Daybell, intensifying public concern and prompting a multi-state search effort.
In June 2020, investigators searched Daybell’s property and discovered the remains of both children. JJ was found buried near a pond, while Tylee’s remains were located in a nearby fire pit.
Authorities determined that both children had died months earlier, in the fall of 2019.
During court proceedings, prosecutors presented evidence that Lori Vallow and Chad Daybell held extreme beliefs that influenced their actions.
In 2023, Lori Vallow was convicted of murder and conspiracy and sentenced to life in prison.
In 2024, Chad Daybell was also found guilty on all charges related to the case.
The case has been widely discussed as an example of how harmful ideologies and personal circumstances can lead to devastating consequences within a family.
