In March 2018, 19-year-old Ezra McCandless arrived at a rural farmhouse in Wisconsin and reported that she had survived a violent encounter involving her former boyfriend, 24-year-old Alex Woodworth.
She initially told authorities that she had been taken into a wooded area and had struggled to escape. Based on her account, investigators first treated her as the victim of a serious crime.
However, as the investigation progressed, inconsistencies began to surface. Physical evidence and digital records did not align with her statements.
Detectives ultimately determined that McCandless had arranged to meet Woodworth at the secluded location and that the events did not occur as she had described.
Evidence presented in court showed that Woodworth suffered multiple stab wounds. Investigators also concluded that McCandless had injured herself in an effort to support her initial version of events.
Prosecutors argued that the incident was a planned act rather than self-defense.
In 2019, Ezra McCandless was convicted of first-degree intentional homicide in Wisconsin and sentenced to life in prison.
