Athena Strand Case: Delivery Driver Sentenced After 2022 Abduction and Murder

In 2022, a routine delivery in a quiet Texas town turned into one of the most devastating cases in recent years.

Tanner Lynn Horner, a 31-year-old FedEx contractor, abducted 7-year-old Athena Strand from her home in Paradise, Texas, on November 30, 2022, while delivering a package that contained her Christmas present.

Horner arrived at the Strand home at approximately 5:30 p.m. Athena was inside the house at the time. At 6:41 p.m., her stepmother called 911 after realizing she was missing, initially believing she may have been hiding or playing.

Investigators later determined that before arriving at the home, Horner had covered the front-facing camera in his delivery van. Footage captured Athena behind him as he drove away.

Audio evidence from inside the vehicle documented the interaction that followed, including Athena asking questions and calling out for her mother.

On December 2, 2022, Athena’s body was discovered in a creek in Wise County, roughly 10 miles from her home. A medical examination determined the cause of death was blunt force trauma and strangulation.

Horner was arrested the same day. During questioning, he provided conflicting accounts of what happened, including claims of an accident and references to an alternate identity.

Authorities also reported that Horner attempted to negotiate his release in exchange for information about Athena’s location.

Despite having no prior criminal record, Horner was charged and later pleaded guilty to capital m*rder and aggravated kidnapping on April 7, 2026.

After 19 days of testimony, a jury deliberated for less than three hours before sentencing him to death on May 6, 2026.

The case remains one of the most heartbreaking reminders of how quickly an ordinary moment can turn into tragedy.
