In 2008, 22-year-old Melbourne woman Sze Wan “Sally” Cheong vanished from her own home in the early hours of the morning, leaving behind a case that remains unresolved.
On April 2, 2008, Sally was last seen at approximately 3:00 a.m. walking through the hallway of her family home in Oakleigh South. The evening before had been routine, including time spent with family playing tennis and having dinner together.
At around 11:00 p.m., her father returned home from a business trip and briefly entered her room to leave keys, noting she appeared to be asleep.
Shortly before 3:00 a.m., her younger sister heard a noise and saw a male silhouette standing outside Sally’s room. She also heard a low male voice before seeing Sally walking from the direction of the bathroom. Believing nothing was unusual, she went back to sleep.
The following morning, Sally was gone. Her father discovered keys placed outside his bedroom, a detail investigators later described as unusual.
Despite taking personal items such as her wallet, phone, iPod, and car keys, Sally’s car remained parked outside, and her passport was left behind. Her phone was switched off by midday, and there has been no activity on her accounts since.
She also took with her a worn security blanket she had kept since childhood, something her family found difficult to understand.
Investigators later uncovered an email she had sent a month prior, expressing fear toward someone she knew. Individuals connected to that message were questioned and later ruled out.
By 2013, authorities acknowledged they had exhausted leads and were effectively starting over.
More than a decade later, Sally Cheong’s disappearance remains unsolved, with no confirmed sightings and no clear explanation of what happened that night.
