Bill and Kay Wood Case: A Fire, a Murder, and a Disappearance Still Unsolved

In 2011, a quiet rural home in Iowa became the center of a mystery that remains unsolved to this day.

On July 30, 2011, Bill Wood, 79, and his 72-year-old wife Kay were last seen attending an auction in Stuart, Iowa. That same night, a fire broke out at their home in Greenfield Township, south of Des Moines, drawing response from multiple fire departments.

Neither Bill nor Kay was found at the scene initially. The following day, their red 2009 Chevrolet Silverado was discovered abandoned nearly 180 miles away in Kansas City, Missouri. Witnesses described the person who left the vehicle as a tall, thin, older white man with short white hair.

Later, investigators recovered human remains from the burned home. DNA testing confirmed the remains belonged to Bill Wood. Authorities determined he had been shot multiple times before the fire was set.

Evidence suggested the truck had been abandoned prior to the fire. Investigators also noted the presence of cigarettes in the garage, despite neither Bill nor Kay being smokers.

Kay Wood has never been found. Authorities do not consider her a suspect and believe her disappearance is the result of foul play.

Family members have expressed their belief that the couple may have been targeted after attending the auction, where they had reportedly purchased antiques.

By 2016, investigators had followed hundreds of leads and indicated that the person responsible was likely someone familiar with the couple.

Kay was described as 5’2, weighing approximately 128 pounds, with gray hair and blue eyes. She wore hearing aids and had a distinctive vertical scar on her abdomen. At the time she disappeared, she was wearing a braided wedding band with a small diamond.

As of 2025, Kay Wood remains missing, and the person responsible for Bill Wood’s death has never been identified.
