In 2017, a tragic case in Saint Charles, Illinois, left a family devastated just days before a milestone birthday.
Randall Coffland, 48, shot and killed his 16-year-old twin daughters, Brittany and Tiffany, before injuring their mother and then taking his own life on March 10, 2017, four days before the twins’ 17th birthday.
Earlier that year, Randall and his wife, Anjum Coffland, had separated, with Anjum moving nearby while the daughters remained living with Randall. In the weeks leading up to the incident, records showed changes in Randall’s behavior, including increased alcohol use and multiple antidepressant prescriptions.
A timeline later revealed several key events. In late February, he received a new prescription and purchased a firearm shortly afterward. On March 1, he contacted his doctor to report the medication was not working, and the dosage was increased. On March 3, he removed his daughters as beneficiaries from his life insurance policy and replaced them with others. On March 5, he purchased a second firearm.
On the afternoon of March 10, Anjum arrived at the residence and initially saw one of her daughters sitting on the couch. Moments later, Randall confronted her in the kitchen.
He then called emergency services, stating what had occurred.
Authorities arrived shortly afterward. Brittany was found on the couch, and Tiffany was in her bedroom. Both had sustained fatal injuries. Anjum survived after being transported for medical care.
Randall was later found deceased in the residence.
The case highlighted concerns about mental health, warning signs, and the importance of early intervention when significant behavioral changes occur.
