Ethics Groups Lodge Fresh Misconduct Allegations Against Former Attorney General Over Document Handling

A consortium of legal organizations has submitted a renewed ethics complaint against former Attorney General Pam Bondi, raising allegations of professional misconduct during her tenure at the Department of Justice. The complaint, filed Wednesday with the Florida Bar, centers on her management of sensitive documents related to Jeffrey Epstein and claims of improper disclosure of victim information.

The filing represents a second attempt by these organizations to prompt an ethics review, following an earlier declined complaint. The groups involved include Lawyers Defending American Democracy, Democracy Defenders Fund, and Lawyers for the Rule of Law, supported by over 120 retired judges, law professors, and practicing attorneys.

Central to the allegations is the claim that Bondi mishandled the publication of documents related to Epstein, the late financier and convicted sex offender. The complainants assert that the Justice Department under her leadership failed to properly protect victim privacy, resulting in the inadvertent release of personal information belonging to dozens of individuals.

The ethics complaint specifically challenges statements Bondi made following the presidential inauguration, when she claimed to possess a comprehensive list of Epstein’s associates ready for public release. The Justice Department subsequently clarified that no such document existed, leading the complainants to characterize her statements as deliberately misleading.

According to the filing, these actions violated professional conduct standards and demonstrated inadequate competence in handling sensitive materials. The groups argue that despite warnings about previous disclosure issues, insufficient precautions were taken to protect confidential information.

The Department of Justice’s inspector general initiated an independent investigation last month into the agency’s document redaction procedures after reports emerged of victim names and images being inadvertently published. The complainants view this as further evidence of systemic failures under Bondi’s leadership.

Beyond the Epstein document issues, the ethics complaint extends to other aspects of Bondi’s tenure. The filing references the department’s alleged violations of court orders in immigration detention cases and raises concerns about prosecutorial decisions targeting various public officials. The complainants suggest these prosecutions lacked proper legal foundation.

Bondi is scheduled to appear before House lawmakers Friday for a closed-door interview regarding her handling of the Epstein documents. This appearance follows controversy over her initial non-appearance in response to a congressional subpoena issued in March. While the Justice Department argued she was not obligated to comply while serving as attorney general, her departure from the position in April has prompted renewed congressional interest.

The Friday session will be conducted as a transcribed interview rather than a formal deposition, though participants note that federal laws regarding false statements to Congress remain applicable. House Oversight Committee members from both parties have expressed interest in questioning the former attorney general about document handling procedures and decision-making processes during her tenure.

The Florida Bar previously declined to investigate the initial complaint while Bondi held office. With her departure from the administration, the legal groups argue that barriers to investigation have been removed and are pressing for immediate review of their allegations.

The complaint characterizes the alleged misconduct as substantial, claiming it resulted in harm to legal rights and damaged public trust in the justice system’s fairness. The filing emphasizes the importance of professional accountability regardless of political position or timing.
