Babysitter Sentenced After Toddler Dies in Dog Attack

A tragic case involving a young child’s death has led to a prison sentence for the woman responsible for his care.

Heather Rodriquez, 37, has been sentenced to 14 years in prison after a 1-year-old boy died following a dog attack while she was babysitting him.

According to authorities, Rodriquez was watching Jiryiah Johnson but left the child in the care of her 13-year-old daughter while stepping away from the home.

During that time, three dogs inside the residence entered the room where the toddler was.

Despite efforts by the teenager to intervene, the child was fatally injured in the attack.

Jiryiah was transported for medical care but died the following day from his injuries.

The case was investigated by the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office, and the dogs involved were later euthanized by court order.

During sentencing, Judge Perez pointed to several aggravating factors, including Rodriquez’s reported resistance when officers attempted to take custody of the dogs.

Rodriquez ultimately accepted a plea agreement, which capped her sentence at 14 years on a second-degree felony charge.
