Opening statements are underway in the high-profile murder trial of Karmelo Anthony.
A jury consisting of 12 members and six alternates has been selected as the case moves forward.
Anthony, now 19, is charged with the April 2, 2025, stabbing death of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf during a rain delay at a high school track meet in Frisco, Texas. He has pleaded not guilty.
The defense is expected to center its case around a claim of self-defense.
One of the key points likely to be highlighted is the physical difference between the two teens.
According to reports, Metcalf stood around 6 feet tall and weighed approximately 225 pounds, while Anthony is about 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighs roughly 130 pounds.
Legal analysts say that if the defense can establish that Metcalf initiated the confrontation or approached Anthony in an aggressive manner, the self-defense argument could carry significant weight under Texas law.
However, there is an important condition.
Under Texas “stand your ground” laws, the claim of self-defense may not apply if Anthony is found to have provoked the altercation.
That question — who initiated the confrontation — is expected to be a central issue for the jury as the trial unfolds.
The case continues as both sides begin presenting their arguments.
