A California sheriff’s deputy is facing felony charges following a high-speed crash that killed a young man and left his fiancée with life-altering injuries.
According to the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office, Deputy Glynn Wilburn, 42, has been charged with:
Gross vehicular manslaughter
Felony reckless driving causing serious injury
A great bodily injury enhancement
A warrant has been issued for his arrest.
The charges stem from a September 2025 crash that claimed the life of 21-year-old Gavin Hinkley, who was just weeks away from his wedding.
At the time of the incident, Wilburn was responding to a shots-fired call, driving his patrol SUV with lights and sirens activated at speeds reportedly reaching 100 mph.
Investigators say he ran a red light and collided with a Tesla Model 3 driven by Hinkley, broadsiding the vehicle at an estimated 71 mph impact speed, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Hinkley and his fiancée, Madeline Fox, had been out running wedding errands at the time.
Authorities noted that moments before the crash, dispatch had already confirmed there were no injuries at the original scene, the suspect vehicle had left, and other deputies were already present — but the high-speed response continued.
Hinkley died at the scene.
Fox, then 20, suffered catastrophic injuries, including:
Traumatic brain injury
Multiple fractures (eye socket, jaw, ribs, hip, pelvis, and lower spine)
A punctured lung
Spleen injuries
Severe facial trauma
She was left in critical condition and has since faced a long recovery, including relearning basic motor functions and swallowing.
If convicted, Wilburn faces significant legal consequences.
The case continues to draw attention as it raises questions about emergency response protocols and accountability.
