Woman Falls to Death After Bungee Cord Was Not Secured

A tragic incident in Brazil has led to multiple arrests after a fatal safety failure during a rope-jumping experience.

Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, 21, from São Paulo state, died after falling approximately 131 feet from the Ponte do Esqueleto — known as Skeleton Bridge — on Saturday.

Freitas, a graduate in physical education and sports management, had joined a guided trail and rope-jump activity organized by a group operating at the site.

According to investigators, the safety procedure failed at a critical moment.

As three guides lifted her to the edge of the bridge, the bungee cord remained on the ground and was never attached to her harness.

She was then released over the side, falling the full height without any support.

Bystanders captured the moment on video, with voices heard shouting about the missing rope only after she had already been dropped.

Freitas’s fiancé was present at the scene and reportedly collapsed in shock following the incident.

Authorities confirmed that the operation was unregulated and lacked proper authorization and oversight.

Six individuals connected to the activity were arrested. Three men now face homicide with eventual intent, a charge applied when someone proceeds with an action while aware that it could result in death.

The investigation remains ongoing.
