A 39-year-old father was fatally shot while driving to pick up his young daughter from after-school care in what authorities are describing as a road rage incident in Temple Hills, Maryland.
Darian Ragland was traveling on local roads on April 10 at approximately 4:30 p.m. when he encountered 33-year-old Polo Shaw, who was attempting to merge into traffic. According to charging documents, Ragland did not allow Shaw to merge in front of his vehicle, which allegedly triggered the fatal confrontation.
The two drivers continued along their route, with witnesses observing them appearing to match each other’s speeds as they traveled onto Branch Avenue. The situation escalated dramatically when they reached the 4700 block of Branch Avenue.
Authorities report that Shaw allegedly fired at Ragland through the victim’s passenger-side window. The gunshot caused Ragland to lose control of his vehicle, which veered left across the road’s median before colliding with a barrier wall. Emergency responders who arrived at the scene found Ragland with gunshot wounds. Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead.
Prince George’s County State’s Attorney Tara Jackson characterized the incident as particularly disturbing, noting that the victim appeared to have been caught completely off guard. According to Jackson, there was no indication that Ragland was engaged in any confrontation or was aware that violence was imminent.
The investigation revealed that the two men were strangers to each other, with police confirming that no prior relationship existed between them. Detectives utilized cellular phone data to place Shaw’s device in the vicinity of the shooting at the time of the incident. Additionally, a license plate reader captured Shaw’s vehicle approximately five miles from the scene just 17 minutes after the shooting occurred.
Three days after the incident, the Prince George’s County Police Department announced a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to an arrest and indictment in the case. Shaw was subsequently arrested and charged with both first-degree and second-degree murder. He is currently being held without bond.
The victim’s mother spoke about the devastating impact of losing her son, revealing through tears that Ragland was her youngest of three sons. She expressed her inability to comprehend the senseless nature of the killing, stating that she now has no remaining children.
The incident has left a 7-year-old girl without her father, who was simply attempting to pick her up from after-school care when the fatal encounter occurred. The case highlights the extreme consequences that can result from road rage incidents, where minor traffic disputes can escalate into deadly violence.
Shaw is scheduled to appear in court on May 18 for further proceedings. The case continues to move through the criminal justice system as prosecutors prepare to present evidence in what they describe as an unprovoked attack stemming from a routine traffic interaction.
